Redhat 推出免費使用選項

Redhat 在上個月宣佈 CentOS Linux 8 會在 2021 年 12 月終止, 那時只可以轉用 CentOS Stream 繼續更新。當然 CentOS 用戶 (包括我) 及開源社群對這抉定有很大反應。現在 Redhat 宣佈有新的選項可以繼續免費使用 RHEL, 原本 RHEL developer 訂閱用戶只可以在開環境進行測試, 現在可以在工作環境使用, 而每個帳號可以在最多 16 個系統使用。

New Year, new Red Hat Enterprise Linux programs: Easier ways to access RHEL:

The Individual Developer subscription for RHEL can be used in production for up to 16 systems. That’s exactly what it sounds like: for small production use cases, this is no-cost, self-supported RHEL. You need only to sign in with a free Red Hat account to download RHEL and receive updates. Nothing else is required. This isn’t a sales program, and no sales representative will follow up. An option will exist within the subscription to easily upgrade to full support, but that’s up to you.

You can also use the expanded Red Hat Developer program to run RHEL on major public clouds including AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure. You have to pay only the usual hosting fees charged by your provider of choice; the operating system is free for both development and small production workloads.

這個舉動對於主機數量較少的使用者很有幫助, 最起碼不用急切升級系統, 但對於長遠升級而言, 我認為轉用用 Rocky Linux, Debian 或 Ubuntu 會是更佳選擇, 因為現在也不肯定這個免費舉動是否一個過過渡方案, 會維持多久也說不準, 可能過兩、三年便會收回.
